Time stands still and you are as I saw you first

Those eyes, that smile

Your laughter rippling down through the air between us, drawing me in,

Promising something I’d imagined but had never known: laughter, warmth,

Love, Home.

I had held my heart in my hands, wanting someone

Worthy, not expecting much and content with that, better to be alone

Then with someone who would crush me again.

You were there, in the wide middle of life, when I least

Expected it: with those eyes, that smile

Your laughter closing the space between us.

My heart beat, a glimmer of life it had not seen in so long.

Our eyes met. I was yours, lost, tumbling down through the years

Until now, when you stop me, all forgotten you say, even my love

My love. 

My heart: it shudders.  It trembles.  I long for your embrace, to awake

From this dream I never dreamed I would dream. For the world to tilt again,

The planets to align. Those eyes, that smile—they are lost to me now.  Your laughter

is at me.

I will mourn.  For me, for us, for you.

I will mourn.

But my heart beats.  You gave me life.  It cannot be taken away, no matter

How hard you try.  I remember death: cold and sterile,

the world not belonging to me. You

Gave me life. You cannot take that from me.

You will not crush me.

I will not die.
